Description
The themes of human existence are universal, transcending culture, language and time. This collection of short stories for children, based on Eastern tradition, touches on some of those themes and provides parents with a wonderful opportunity to provoke discussion and questions about matter that will be of interest and concern to their children. Each story is short and selfcontained, and is well within the attention span of a child. From my experience in reading these stories to my own children, now aged 5 and 7, and from my background as an academic psychologist, I know that young children can relate to the animals in the stories and to the dilemmas and problems that the animals face, particularly in their relationships with one another. The stories lead naturally to talking about what the animals did and how they responded to one another. Some of the stories conclude with an acceptance of fate, and they can lead to interesting discussions with children about the times and circumstances when it is better to accept fate and those when it is better to try to change the situation. The author brings to her story telling a unique insight and perspective that emerges from her having been steeped in both Eastern and Western societies and cultures for most of her life. The images provoked by the stories are gentle and kind, and when combined with supportive discussions with parents, will encourage meaningful reflection by children as they drift off to sleep at night. This book of stories will support the desire of parents to prepare their children for productive and satisfying lives in the future.
