Not Made In Heaven is based in early post Independent India in the 1950s in the Terai region of Uttar Pradesh which is now the state of Uttarakhand in North India. The novel is set in an atmosphere of euphoria and hope. The prevailing socio-economic conditions are brought out ,as the family is making serious attempts to find a suitable husband for their elder daughter, Nandita. The clash between tradition and the aspirations of young, modern and optimistic new India is the main theme of the story.
