Description
The book is primarily intended to assist better understanding of algebra among wide user community. Algebraic Formulae are useful for both multiplication and factorisation. In this book, some of the frequently used formulae are derived by Geometrical Method. This approach makes abstract algebraic terms more meaningful by relating them to concrete things like straight edges, areas of plane figures and volumes of solid objects.
This method of deriving the formulae has been known to ancient mathematicians around the world. It is also briefly mentioned in some present day textbooks. However currently, the method has not been promoted and used as extensively as it could be. Hence, an attempt is made here to use it more comprehensively for deriving and understanding frequently used algebraic formulae. This method is also a way of verification of formulae through four geometrical objects. Permutations and combinations of certain shapes and sizes help to derive the more commonly used formulae.
This approach builds on existing knowledge on geometrical shapes, introduces concepts and focuses on practical hands on experience. Here algebraic formulae for multiplication are derived as a practical exercise. It is hoped this method encourages reader to tackle the problems with zeal and confidence.
This is only a modest beginning and not an end of an attempt. It can definitely be improved upon or replaced by other approaches. Suggestions are welcome from one and all.
Even though Mathematics is a practical and exciting subject; it doesn't attract everybody. There are perceptions that it is complex, dull, abstract or a combination of all these. These misgivings apply to algebra as well.
After interactions with various groups of students, teachers, researchers, consultants and parents, it became clear that there is a need to explore and share alternate methodologies.
The main objective is to dispel apparent perceptions about algebra as complex and abstract subject. As a first small step to this mammoth task, some of the frequently used algebraic formulae are explained through geometrical shapes.
Using familiar concepts and shapes, through stimulating and practical approaches, this book attempts to bring algebra to life.
